A Clockwork orange, features a young man named Alex DeLarge whose sole purpose in life is violence, sex and music. During one of his escapades, Alex kills the cat woman and his gang turns and leaves him to be caught by the cops. Whilst completing his sentence in jail, Alex volunteers for the Ludovico experiment in an attempt to get out of jail earlier. The experiment however, consisted of a classical conditioning technique in order to try to cure Alex of his violent behavior. He’s shown violent films while being given a drug to induce a nauseating reaction. Now, whenever Alex felt violent he immediately felt sick and stopped himself. This was their way of curing violent people.
Much like Ivan Pavlov’s dog experiment, the Ludovico experiment consisted of a conditioned stimulus and response. Pavlov exposed a dog to a ticking sound and food at the same time. He repeated this until eventually, when Pavlov began the ticking; the dog would automatically begin salivating because it associated the ticking with the food. Just like how Alex becomes conditioned to feel revulsion when experiencing feelings of violence.
