As an ultra-violent young man plaguing future Britain, Alex must be controlled. After being arrested, he is given the option to undergo the Ludovico treatment—Classical conditioning. Classical conditioning involves the presentation of a neutral stimulus along with a conditioned stimulus in order to evoke a certain response—a conditioned response. In this case, Alex is presented with images of violence accompanied by Beethoven’s 9th (his favorite “classical” piece) while he is injected with an unknown substance. This substance causes him to react negatively, screaming for mercy from both the images and music. Afterwards, he can no longer see violence or hear Beethoven without feeling sick.
